Selected study aids

While the Holy Scripture is considered irreplaceable primary literature in any theological study, selected study aids can serve as useful secondary literature. However, it is important to view these resources in the correct light. As Paul says in 2 Timothy 3:16-17, “All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.”

Study aids can help us better understand the Scriptures, but true insight is a gift that cannot be purchased. It reminds us of the words in Proverbs 2:6: “For the Lord gives wisdom, and from His mouth come knowledge and understanding.” This understanding is not just a matter of intellectual comprehension, but requires a correct attitude of the heart towards God and our fellow humans. Jesus emphasized this principle in the Sermon on the Mount, when He said: “Blessed are the pure in heart; for they shall see God” (Matthew 5:8).

Darüber hinaus sollten wir niemals vergessen, dass, während die Suche nach Wissen wichtig ist, das Verständnis, das durch den Heiligen Geist kommt, von noch größerer Bedeutung ist. As it is written in 1 Corinthians 2:10-12, “But God has revealed it to us by his Spirit. The Spirit searches all things, even the deep things of God.” For who knows a person’s thoughts except their own spirit within them? In the same way no one knows the thoughts of God except the Spirit of God. We have not received the spirit of the world but the Spirit who is from God, that we may understand what God has freely given us.”

The right heart attitude, the love for God and fellow men, even those who are hostile to us, opens the door to this divine knowledge. Let these words serve as a guide as you explore the treasures of Holy Scripture and secondary literature.
